Steven Gerrard identifies key issues Liverpool need to address in transfer market

After losing the UEFA Champions League final to Real Madrid, Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool need to buy a goalscoring midfielder this summer.

Los Blancos won their record-extending 14th title with a 1-0 victory over the Reds in Paris on Saturday.

In the first half, Jurgen Klopp’s Reds were dominant, putting their opponents on the back foot and creating several nice chances.

However, Blancos goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was on hand to stop the Reds with a series of stunning saves.

After the break, the Whites came out stronger, and Vinicius Junior scored in the 59th minute to break the deadlock.

After falling behind, Liverpool created another excellent chance, but Mohamed Salah’s attempt was once again deflected over by the Belgian keeper.

While attempting to find the top bin, Guinean Naby Keita blasted a wayward ball into the stands.

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard believes the Merseysiders need to sign a new No.8 who can score a few goals.

Gerrard was at the stadium to watch his club play. After the game, he commented (as reported by Metro) on BT Sport:

“Jordan (Henderson) and James Milner are not getting any younger. They’re still top players at this level, of course, and they’ll want to go on and do more.

“But for Liverpool, if you think about the next five, six, seven years, they’re going to need a midfielder, an eight, who can get goals, who can get double figures.”

However, Gerrard underlined the importance of having an adventurous, goalscoring midfielder.

He added:

“They are heavily reliant on the front three – or the front five if you include Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino. But you always need one of those midfielders that’s going to get in the box and get you goals.”
