Liverpool forward Sadio Mane is ready to join Bayern Munich after a deal for up to £35 million was finalised, but one pundit has questioned it.

Ally McCoist has questioned Sadio Mane’s decision to join Bayern Munich from Liverpool.

The Reds have agreed to a £35 million agreement with the Bundesliga giants, bringing the Senegalese international’s time at Anfield to an end. Liverpool will earn a fixed fee of €32 million (£27.4 million) plus €9 million (£7.7 million) in add-ons.

All that appears to be left is for Bayern to make the transfer official. But it’s one that has McCoist, a former Rangers and Scotland player, puzzled.

“Why is he doing it, is it for financial reasons? I don’t know, that’s the question we can’t answer,” the popular pundit said on talkSPORT.

“Is it because he wants to play in another country? Possibly. Is he going to a better league? No.

“Is he going to a more competitive league? No. Is he going to a better team? No. I find it very strange.

“The only thing I can see is the lure, the size of the club, Bayern Munich, is that something he’s always wanted to do?

“I could actually understand it more if it had been Real Madrid or Barcelona. I could understand that a little bit more, because of maybe the lure of one of those clubs, particularly Real Madrid.

“I don’t get it, maybe he just wants a fresh challenge. Maybe he just feels that he’s [gone] a little bit stale and that I can appreciate.”
