Almost Done: Liverpool very close to sealing deal for ‘fantastic’ 22-year-old midfielder than Manu Kone
Liverpool are more likely to seal the deal for Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram than his countryman Manu Kone this summer.
That’s according to journalist Neil Jones, via Give Me Sport, who shared more details on Liverpool’s search for new players.
With the Jurgen Klopp having already added one midfielder to his squad this summer after sealing the deal for Argentina international Mac Allister.
Following his £35 million transfer from Brighton, World Cup champion Alexis Mac Allister will join Liverpool during preseason.
When it comes to adding to their midfield, Liverpool is not going to stop there.
After letting four players who play in the middle of the park leave this summer, Klopp won’t want to be without choices.
The fact that players like Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic missed significant amounts of the previous season due to injury makes this especially true.
Jones thinks that Liverpool will now be more likely to sign Khephren Thuram this summer than Manu Kone.
At the European Championships, the Nice midfielder is a member of France’s under-21 team.
He has already earned a senior France international cap and has shone in Ligue 1 on the south coast this year.
Liverpool set to move for Thuram over Kone
Speaking about Liverpool’s potential transfer business, Jones said: “The signing of Alexis Mac Allister may be done and dusted, but midfield remains a priority for Liverpool in this summer’s transfer market.
“Obviously Khephren Thuram and Manu Kone have been mentioned. From my understanding, Thuram is the likeliest out of those – the profile of him, his physique, his age, and the club he’s playing at, the kind of money that would be involved – I think he perfectly fits the bill.
“It remains to be seen how willing Nice are to let him go, and I think the fact that there looks like a number of midfield players likely to move soon in this market means that Nice might just be waiting to see how the dominos fall, and what kind of price they can get for him.
“Still, I think Liverpool and Thuram, even if it hasn’t moved much in the last seven days and a fee hasn’t yet been agreed, he’s definitely been identified as someone Liverpool want.”
Given their need for midfielders, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Liverpool push for Kone later in the transfer season even if they sign Thuram.
A terrific dribbler, the ‘amazing’ 22-year-old would provide Liverpool another option when switching from defence to attack.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s possible inclusion in midfield would provide them a great passing and dribbling double threat.
In addition to consistently creating opportunities for his teammates, Khephren Thuram can play solid defence.
He is like Mac Allister in that he is adept in a variety of midfield positions.
With Kone’s performance in the last third being in doubt, it would make sense for Liverpool to attempt to sign Thuram before him.
