The Real reason Jurgen Klopp decided to sign £85m Liverpool star
Famous Journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed Jurgen Klopp was ‘really surprised’ by how good Darwin Nunez was against Liverpool.
Nunez recently completed an £85 million deal to Liverpool, surpassing the previous record of £75 million for Van Dijk and becoming the most expensive player in Reds history.
The Uruguayan international will be looking to replace the departing Sadio Mane, whose success at Anfield will not be simple to reproduce.
Many people think that Nunez’s two goals versus Liverpool over two legs are what first caught Klopp’s attention in the skilful attacker.
One of the major drives of Klopp’s interest in Nunez, besides his inherent ability to score goals, is reportedly his workhorse ethic.
Fabrizio Romano commented on Nunez moving to Anfield on his YouTube channel, saying the following:
This Darwin Nunez story started a long time ago.”
“It’s true that Darwin had a fantastic impact against Liverpool in the Champions League games and Jurgen Klopp is a big fan of checking players in the real games in the face-to-face games, with his own Liverpool and he was really surprised by the impact of this fantastic striker.”
The Uruguayan had an outstanding season, scoring 33 goals in all competitions for Benfica, and his stellar campaign led to links with some of the best teams in Europe, like Liverpool and Manchester United.
Real Madrid were really interested,’ according to Romano, in Nunez before he moved to Merseyside.
Nunez caught the attention of the European champions after they were unable to recruit long-term target Kylian Mbappe.
Nunez doesn’t have a passport for Europe, though. It rendered Los Blancos’ potential acquisition of the Uruguayan “impossible.”
Darwin has since teamed up with his new teammates ahead of the preseason starting next week.
