Kylian Mbappe reveal the reason he did not join Liverpool despite discussion with Jurgen Klopp
Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe has disclosed that he had transfer talks with Liverpool before deciding to stay in the French capital. The French striker turned down a lucrative new three-year contract from Real Madrid to stay at the Parc des Princes.
After running his contract down at PSG, the 23-year-old was expected to join Real but instead chose to commit his future to the French champions in a blockbuster move that was finally revealed over the weekend.
Although all of the debate about Mbappe’s future has seemed to center on Real Madrid, who have been chasing him for some time, the striker disclosed that Liverpool was also on his radar and that he met them when he left Monaco in 2017.
Speaking to The Telegraph about Liverpool, Mbappe said: “We talked a little bit, but not too much. We talked a little bit,” the striker said, before adding: “I talked to Liverpool because it’s the favourite club of my mum, my mum loves Liverpool. I don’t know why you will have to ask her! It’s a good club and we met them five years ago. When I was in Monaco I met them. It’Leeub.”
While Mbappe’s comments on holding talks with Liverpool may come as a surprise, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hinted earlier this month that the club was interested in signing the striker, but insisted that they couldn’t ‘be part of these battles’ when it came to pursuing a mega-money deal for the forward.
He said: “Of course, we are interested in Kylian Mbappe, we are not blind. We like him and if you don’t like him then you have to question yourself. But, no, we are not, we cannot be part of these battles. There must be other clubs involved and that is fine. He is a great player.”
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and LaLiga president Javier Tebas were angered by Mbappe’s decision to stay in his homeland, with the latter issuing a critical statement in the wake of the deal’s confirmation.
