“Liverpool are leading the race” – Fabrizio Romano issues update on £78m Wonderkid

Transfer Expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed he’s heard rumours of Liverpool being interested in signing Benfica star Antonio Silva, who is regarded by many as the next big star coming from Portuguese football.

The 18-year-old center-back is primarily being linked with a move to Manchester United as the defender continues to have a breakout season with Benfica, according to the Italian journalist who spoke to CaughtOffside, who also suggested that Liverpool may be in the running to sign Silva.

The adolescent has played every minute of Benfica’s UEFA Champions League group stage and has made 14 appearances for the club in all competitions this season.

As a result, the defender has drawn a lot of interest from other teams, with CaughtOffside reporting that the youngster may already be worth up to €90 million (£78 million).

At 6’1″, Silva has already drawn comparisons to former Benfica star Ruben Dias, and many believe the 18-year-old could one day follow in the Manchester City star’s footsteps and join the Premier League, where a Liverpool acquisition might become a possibility.

Indeed, the sky is the limit for Silva, with the youngster’s reputation seemingly growing by the day amongst fans and pundits.

And according to Romano, Liverpool could be in the race to sign the defender in 2023 if Benfica are open to their latest wonderkid leaving for a big club.

Romano said: “I’ve seen some reports of Liverpool and Manchester United looking at him. For sure, top clubs are following him but it’s important to say that there’s still nothing serious or concrete, as of now.

“He is still developing as a player, but let’s see where he is in a few years, the future looks bright for him.”
