Liverpool set to consider summer move for Fulham star midfilder Joao Palhinha
Liverpool are eyeing a move for Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha in the summer transfer window accordingto Football Insider.
Following his strong performances in the middle of the park for Fulham this season, Palhinha is drawing interest from a number of clubs.
The online news source reports that the Reds, who withdrew from the competition to acquire Jude Bellingham, have sent scouts to observe the 26-year-old on more than one occasion and have identified him as a potential transfer target.
Although Bellingham was Jurgen Klopp’s first objective, the 19-year-old’s asking price has prevented Liverpool from making a transfer. The German coach is looking to revamp the engine room that has helped him succeed during his seven years at Anfield.
The Merseysiders would reportedly be unable to make any additions in time for the upcoming season due to the cost of the England international’s contract, leading to the search for other possibilities to enhance the midfield options.
Mason Mount, a midfielder for Chelsea, has been given priority by Liverpool. His contract with the club expires in 2024, and if he doesn’t sign a new one, the Blues may decide to sell him at the end of the current campaign.
James Ward-Prowse, Moises Caicedo, Matheus Nunes, Nicolo Barella, and Alex Scott have all been linked with moves to Liverpool. In contrast, Klopp might approve a transfer for Palhinha.
James Milner, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are expected to leave Anfield when their contract expires at the end of the season, creating space for further signings in the midfield department.
According to Football Insider, the Reds have a strong relationship with the Jorge Mendes-owned Gestifute agency, which represents Palhinha and this could make the transfer less complicated.
The Portuguese player, who signed a five-year contract with Fulham last summer after leaving Sporting, has established himself as a fan favourite at Craven Cottage, making 31 appearances and netting four goals in all competitions.
The Cottagers are not under any obligation to sell Palhinha this summer, but if Liverpool make the appropriate offer, Fulham may find it difficult to refuse.
Palhinha, who has represented Portugal 20 times and netted two goals is valued at £31m by Transfermarkt.
