Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez: Liverpool injury news and return dates ahead of Man City clash
Latest Liverpool injury news including Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, Thiago Alcantara and Calvin Ramsay ahead of the Premier League clash against Manchester City.
Liverpool is getting closer to playing again in the Premier League, but there are still some injury and conditioning issues.
Due to the international break, the Reds have not competed in a game in nearly two weeks; their most recent appearance was a Champions League loss to Real Madrid. The next Premier League match is an away trip to Manchester City on Saturday.
To be able to participate in the journey to the Etihad Stadium, Jurgen Klopp will be counting on some of his injured players to achieve a full recovery. They include players like Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, and Thiago Alcantara, while Cody Gakpo’s status is still up in the air due to his illness.
Luis Diaz
Luis Diaz has been out with a knee injury since the start of October, but has now returned to full first-team training.
The Colombia international was originally due to return in December, but suffered a setback which resulted in surgery and extended his time on the sidelines.
Diaz is now nearing a return to a return to the pitch, and The Times have reported that the forward is now back in full training ahead of Liverpool’s return to action.
The Reds face an away trip to Manchester City on Saturday, and while a start may be too soon for Diaz he could end up featuring on the bench.
Expected return date: Man City (A) – April 1
Darwin Nunez
Darwin Nunez suffered from a cut ankle during Liverpool’s defeat to Real Madrid earlier this month.
As a result, the striker was withdrawn from the Uruguay squad for their international matches against Japan and South Korea.
Nunez will be due to report back for training on Merseyside later this week, and it’s from there that he will be assessed by the Liverpool medical department.
It’s too early at this stage to make a judgement on whether Nunez will be fit to face Man City, but Liverpool will be hoping that he will be available for the trip to the Etihad.
Expected return date: Early April
Cody Gakpo
Cody Gakpo was initially withdrawn from the Netherlands squad for their Euro 2024 qualifiers due to illness.
He missed the 4-0 defeat to France, but it was later confirmed that he had returned to the squad for the match against Gibraltar.
Koeman admitted that he was unsure if he would be available for the clash on Monday night, but he ended up bringing the Liverpool forward on at half-time in the Netherlands 3-0 win.
Gakpo will return to Merseyside this week, and it’s from there that the Liverpool medical team will make a judgement on his availability for Saturday’s clash against Man City.
Expected return date: Man City (A) – April 1
Thiago Alcantara
Thiago Alcantara has been sidelined since early February with a hip flexor injury.
The Spaniard was yet to make a return to Liverpool first-team training before the international break, and there is still uncertainty over when he will be fit to return.
Being available for the trip to Man City is looking unlikely, so Liverpool will hope to have him return later on in April with games against Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham on the horizon.
Expected return date: Early/mid April
Calvin Ramsay
Calvin Ramsay suffered a knee injury earlier this year and is set to spend the rest of the season on the sidelines.
Ramsay has made just two first-team appearances in his debut season at Anfield since moving from Aberdeen last summer.
Liverpool will hope to have the right-back have a patient recovery with the hope to have him return in time for pre-season training in July.
Expected return date: July pre-season.
