Report: Liverpool accelerate efforts to beat Man United and City to major transfer target for 2023 with agreements in place
Liverpool are reportedly looking set to win the race for the transfer of Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
The promising young Argentinean international has had a fantastic season for Benfica and has made a big impression while representing his nation at the 2022 World Cup.
La Capital reports that Liverpool has sped up negotiations to sign Fernandez to a pre-contract because they wanted to act quickly to avoid competition from rivals Manchester United and Manchester City.
La Capital makes a sizable claim, yet the majority of media sources and journalists, including Fabrizio Romano in his Daily Briefing for CaughtOffside, indicate that Jude Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund is Liverpool’s main midfield target.
According to Mundo Deportivo, LFC may even sign both Fernandez and Bellingham in the same summer, which would be a significant message from the Reds.
Given that players like James Milner, Jordan Henderson, and Thiago Alcantara are now older and past their prime, Jurgen Klopp appears to need at least one, if not more, midfield additions.
Fernandez may have also been helpful to Manchester United, who would gain from an improvement over players like Scott McTominay and Fred as they attempt to return to their previous levels.
Ilkay Gundogan’s contract with City expires in the summer, therefore they may want to consider adding players to that part of the field.
