Trent Alexander-Arnold finally speaks out amid Liverpool criticism and makes ‘limits’ claim
Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool has revealed, amid ongoing criticism, that playing a certain position is like “playing with the shackles on.”
As the World Cup approaches, the England has been a hot topic among both fans and commentators. As the argument rages over whether Kyle Walker, Reece James, Trent Alexnder-Arnold, or Kieran Trippier should be included among those traveling to Qatar, Gareth Southgate is faced with a defensive dilemma.
Although Walker and Alexander-Arnold both sustained injuries in recent weeks, with the Reds right-back out for up to two weeks with an ankle ailment, Southgate now has to wait anxiously to see how his defensive alternatives will fare.
The 24-year-old was taken off against Arsenal at halftime on Sunday, and JJürgen Klopp later confirmed the news. Alexander-Arnold was examined for much of the first half of the season, but he has subsequently taken steps to improve his right-back position.
“I never like to play the position, I play the game,” he told GQ Magazine. “You play the position, it limits you. It’s like playing with shackles on.
“I’ve always thought that with a sensible mind, play the game, get in positions that will hurt the opposition, and at the same time do the defensive work you need to do. It’s more: Play the game how it needs to be played.”
