Champions League: Why the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 draw was Redone
The Round of 16 draws of the Champions League held earlier on Monday, was canceled after following an error.
The European governing body voided the results of the first draw and decided to conduct a redraw three hours later.
The issue stems from two errors that were caught in the original draw conducted
First, Manchester United’s name was erroneously placed in the pot to be drawn against Villarreal. However, because both teams played in the same group, this should not have been allowed.
Later, a reporter also noticed that Manchester United was not included as an option to be drawn against Atletico Madrid when it should have been. Liverpool, which played in the same group as Atletico Madrid were mistakenly picked instead.
UEFA chalks up the problems to “a technical problem with the software of an external service provider that instructs the officials as to which teams are eligible to play each other.”
The new draw that has now been conducted will See FC Salzburg initially draw to face Liverpool, but will now tackle Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.
Manchester United have now discovered that they will face Atletico Madrid, after initially being pitted up against Paris Saint-Germain
Premier League champions Manchester City will now face Sporting Lisbon, after initially being tasked with taking on Red Bull Salzburg.
Defending champions Chelsea’s tie was unchanged from the original draw, meaning they will have to get past Lyon in a bid to reach the quarter-finals. Liverpool will lock horns with Inter Milan.
A mouth-watering clash will see Champions League serial-winners Real Madrid face PSG.
