“Very important for you” – Watch Lionel Messi send a heartfelt message to former Liverpool star he ‘loves so much’ as shock transfer move is confirmed
Superstar Lionel Messi of Paris Saint-Germain has congratulated former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez on his spectacular comeback to Nacional.
The weekend saw the remarkable return of former Liverpool player Luis Suarez to his original club Nacional in Uruguay.
Luis Suarez and his family were welcomed by a sold-out stadium, and words from players like Lionel Messi were included in a video posted on social media.
Along with lending him his £12 million private aircraft, Suarez’s former teammate at Barcelona flew him to Uruguay for the unveiling.
“I want to send you a big hug and wish you all the best in this new stage of your career,” Messi said.
“I know how important it is for you to be there at Nacional, back at home and in your country after so long, to prepare for the World Cup which is just around the corner.
“Now I’m going to have to follow Nacional from here. You know I love you a lot and would do anything for you. I wish you all the best and hope to see you soon.”
Suarez joins Nacional on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Atletico Madrid.
The 35-year-old began his professional career in the Uruguayan team’s academy but was only able to make four first-team appearances before being signed by a club in Europe.
At the Camp Nou, Suarez and Messi played together for six years before the latter left on a free transfer to join La Liga rivals Atletico.
Last summer, Messi left Barcelona and transferred for free to join Paris Saint-Germain.
The Uruguayan admitted it was ‘difficult’ to accept the invitation to return to his hometown with his previous team despite his choice to stay in Europe.
“It has been very exciting, all the videos and messages that have reached us and touched our hearts about this situation.
“It was impossible to reject this possibility of playing again with Nacional,” Suarez said in a video message when the signing was announced.
“I hope to enjoy this new stage and see you in the coming days. I send a big hug to all of you and thank you for all the love you have given us. See you soon.”
