Both Liverpool and Tottenham were seeking for a win at Anfield in a critical game for their Premier League hopes, but the game finished with a point apiece following an exciting match.
With title challengers, Man City not playing until Sunday, the Reds were aiming to open up a gap at the top of the league. Spurs were hoping to achieve the same in fourth place, with Arsenal’s closest rivals also absent on Saturday.
In the end, the score was 1-1, a result that didn’t help either team significantly. The draw put Liverpool ahead on goal difference but gave City the advantage, while Arsenal will now want to break away from their north London rivals before next week’s rivalry.
The host had a lot of possession and attempted to use it to unsettle Tottenham’s formation. Spurs dug deep and defended valiantly, blocking shots and heading away crosses as they attempted to attack on the breakaway with Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, and Dejan Kulusevski.
The first half was tense, with both teams appearing dangerous at different moments. Virgil van Dijk hit the crossbar from a corner near the end of the half, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg struck the post from distance moments later, but the teams went into the break goalless.
in the 57th minute, Tottenham went ahead after Ryan Sessegnon, who was taking up advanced positions all game to run into the space behind Trent Alexander-Arnold, found Son with a simple square pass for the South Korean star to tap home.
However, less than 20 minutes later, it was a deflected strike that made the difference, Luis Diaz’s shot deflecting off Rodrigo Bentancur to wrongfoot Hugo Lloris and draw Liverpool level.
Both teams went for the win, with Spurs putting Kane and Hojbjerg in dangerous positions late in the game, but neither side was able to score a third goal, and the game concluded with a draw.
Liverpool are now ahead of Manchester City on goal difference, but Pep Guardiola’s side have a game in hand. Tottenham has fallen a point behind Arsenal, who can go four points clear if they beat Leeds United on Sunday.
